ROLE PROFILES AND IMPORTANT CHARACTERS

Only four members of the Valdemar family are pre-determined- Lady Valdemar and Lord Valdemar (who are NPCs), and their daughter and her husband, the Mistress and Master of the house. The Mistress and Master are the only two roles available to be picked up that have any pre-set history which must be noted by applicants, though they are designed to be expanded on and explored however players see fit.

You can also quickly check family members currently in the game here. In order to read or check other character's AU histories in depth, please refer to individual characters' journals.

NPC Characters

Lady Laura Valdemar

Even as a young woman, Laura Daxter was said to be something of a wildcard; with her flaming red hair, lively demeanour and passion for all things new and exciting, she certainly wasn't the demure young woman her parents wanted or could, indeed, control. Rather than rush into marriage, she sought out every available means of educating herself and took to science and technology, a subject well suited to both her skilful hands. She met her husband, the young Percival Valdemar, as a member of a small society dedicated to technological advancement; it is often said that the combination of her practical skills and his mind allowed them to produce some of the era's most incredible and complex creations. After 1838, however, she announced her retirement so that she might raise her only daughter with a curious suddenness that has inspired many a rumour over the years. Now 88, she is said to have an almost matriarchal hold on both her estate and village.

Lord Percival Valdemar

The 86 years old baron Lord Valdemar is ostensibly retired; born into the wealthy Valdemar family, he attended Christ Church college at Oxford university to pursue his fascination with science and knowledge as a young man and begin the extensive theoretical work that would dominate the majority of his life. It is often whispered that, though they worked best as a team, they would have been nothing without his brilliant imagination, and that Lady Valdemar resented the attention he received- certainly he has, throughout his life, been seen as something of a henpecked husband, indulging his domineering wife's every whim. After Laura's retirement he continued his work, though it lacked the lustre that their dual efforts achieve and he soon fell out of the public eye and retreated to Aungier House, where he has been living, recluse-like, with his own family ever since. A quiet, serious man, he is rarely seen around the house and prefers instead to lock himself in his study to read or write.

Playable Roles

The Mistress ▼ currently open

The sole heir to the Valdemar name, people say, turned out to be something of a disappointment for her parents. Rather than inheriting their hungry scientific bent, even as a child she seemed far more interested in philosophy than physics, preferring to while away the hours in the mansion's gardens with the family pets or a book of poetry. After marrying young, she devoted her adult life to philanthropy and is renowned for her work with foundlings across Yorkshire- often at the expense of her own children's needs, it has been said. She has been known to invite particularly promising young orphans into her home, to work and learn under her generous wing.

The Master ▼ currently L | [personal profile] ryuuzaki

Rumours are split on whether the young mistress fell for her husband apart from the influence of her parents or if the entire marriage was engineered; regardless, the Valdemar family could not have been happier to find their daughter wedded to a man such as their son-in-law, first introduced to the family as a student for Lord Valdemar's research. Not only is he a man of excellent social standing, but he also has a far-reaching reputation as a man of science and invention, and has sworn to continue the family's legacy with his own extensive studies. Much was made of his decision to take the Valdemar name at the time, with suggestions made that he might prove to be as under his wife's thumb as his father-in-law.
